nu man ek heima, nu vii
nine know I worlds, nine giantesses
From V?lusp, Verse 2.

Odenwald, in the Frankish Empire, AD814

It was market day. Before I bought what we needed for the week, I looked around for exciting things. I could never afford them, but I could dream.
The man who sold mirrors was there. He knew by now that I wouldn't buy one, but he always let women look into them. I smiled at him, picked up a mirror and looked at my reflection. It was a beautiful face, framed by wavy locks of pale yellow hair. But I looked pale and sad. Worse was the bruise Karl had given me the night before in his drunken lust.
Something caught the corner of my eye, and I looked away from the mirror. Gazing at me like a love-sick calf was Erich, the tanner's apprentice. Two years younger than me, he seized every chance to sneak close to me and whisper that he loved me. But he wouldn't here, knowing word would get back to my husband. If Karl found out Erich wanted me, Erich would catch a beating, but it would be nothing to what I would suffer.
We were looking each other in the eye across the market. I turned my head sharply away. Had anyone seen us, or noticed my haste in averting my eyes?
Besides Erich, only one person was looking at me, and her expression as always was unreadable. There was no mistaking the tall slender figure of Margarete, who stood above most men, a long staff of ash-wood at her side. As always she wore, not a woman's kirtle, but mannish clothes: a jerkin and breeches of some animal's skin, raw not cured, marked by years of wear. She was shod not in leather like the villagers, but in clogs of wood.
She lived alone in the woods, and all said she was a witch. She wore no crucifix, a deadly risk in the realm of Emperor Chlodowech the Pious. The church boasted that the last heathens in Odenwald had been converted over fifty years before, but Margarete was no Christian. How long could it be before she was dragged to Lorisheim Abbey for trial?
It was dangerous to be seen as friendly with her, but I found her comforting. Always her long stride was firm but unhurried, her face calm.
She drew near me now and that face, framed by dark brown hair that fell straight on each side to her jaw, looked down at me from her great height. Her eyes the color of stormclouds were full of concern. She must have seen me looking at Erich, but she would never tell a soul.
"He's hit you again," she said.
I nodded, mute. There was no point denying it.
"How can you stay with him?"
"Where else would I go?"
"I manage to live without a husband."
I couldn't talk about this. People would hear, and denounce my sin.
"Why do you come to market, Margarete? You never buy anything."
"Nor do you."
"Of course I do! We buy more food than we grow. My husband's a blacksmith, you know, not a farmer."
"You never buy anything for yourself." Her eyes flicked to the mirrors.
What could I say? I looked down. "I must be about my business." I didn't return my gaze to her face, but hurried away to buy what I needed.
I went home, and first made sure I had plenty of ale brewed. Nothing would anger Karl more than a shortage of drink. Next I set a kettle of soup over the fire, then baked fresh bread. After that I did all I could to make the house clean, tidy, neat. Any little thing wrong could send Karl into a rage after a drink.
When he came in, I rushed to pour him a cup of ale. He swilled it down in a few hearty swallows, his eyes on me the whole time.
"Show yourself to me."
