Excerpt

Melissa walked the street, aimlessly looking for something, but she didn’t know what. Not a bad looker, Melissa always garnered the attention of the opposite sex, and having dates was never a problem. The problem came with her lack of direction and knowing what she wanted to do in life. She pulled her short blond hair behind her ear as she bent down to peer in the store window. A trendy dress shop, the outfits in the window presented an edgy appearance, one with short skirts, plaid shirts, and hiking boots. She smiled as she dreamed about being able to afford such an outfit. Her own faded jeans and tee shirt which donned the name of the college she had dropped recently; didn’t fit the way she now saw herself.

College life had been a big bore to her. She’d signed up for a business degree and found the classes literally put her to sleep. Her counselor tried to talk her into changing degrees and staying in college, but nothing on the curriculum appealed to her. She wanted to ask the man if they had a degree that let her wander around until she figured out where she fit. The answer came as no. She had attended one year, taking all the basics, and the second year was under way when she realized she simply couldn’t see herself in the business world, wearing tailored business suits and playing by the rules. It just wasn’t her.

Sighing heavily, she walked on with dreams of changing her wardrobe and style. But she didn’t even have a job and her student loan in which she’d gotten to help float her through her second year of school would dwindle away soon if she didn’t do something. Plus, she had to pay it back. She had six months and then she had to make the payments on it. The thought was she’d be able to waiver the due date another year, had she enrolled for a third. But she dropped out before she had to pay the tuition and fees for the second year, seeing the opportunity with a little money in the bank, to figure out what she wanted to do in life. Buying a new wardrobe wasn’t on the schedule for now though. Buying food and paying utilities and rent for her studio apartment were her main concern. But what to do?

Spying an empty bench in the park across the street, Melissa weaved through the traffic to the other side and made her way to the spot. Birds chirped happily overhead in the trees, the last of the warm days before fall hits. A few leaves changed color already and fluttered effortlessly to the earth. Melissa sat back and watched people walk by. A mother with two young children pushed a stroller to the park. Other mothers and children played and greeted them. An older couple walked the trail, talking quietly amongst themselves. Ahead a group of young ladies like her came into view, wearing pants, leather, chains, and tight tee shirts. Melissa sat tall as if drawn to them.
