Excerpt

I checked myself out in the mirror, for the fourth time that morning. My nicely pressed white oxford button down dress shirt fit perfectly. It was tailored enough to accentuate my V-shaped torso and compact frame, but not so tight as to make me look like a door bouncer at some night club.

My navy blue suit was also cut just right, thank goodness my uncle hooked me up with his trusted tailor. Everything fit just right and for the first time in my life, I looked like a business professional, ready to tackle any task assigned.

My blond hair was kept stylishly short and I made a special trip to the barber’s for the full-on treatment just the day before. My new haircut and suiting made my inexperienced nineteen-year-old self look a little older, more sophisticated and professional than I actually was.

Thus, I was now satisfied that I was ready to start my very first day as a full-time executive assistant.

While I left my bedroom, I heard my Uncle's advice starting from his bedroom before he was able to corner me off before I hit the stairs.

"Remember, you are not just some ‘clerk’, you are a professional executive assistant. A professional must always be on time, do his job well, and look every bit the part. That's why everything must always look immaculate. You are after all the very first person a potential client will come in contact with when they enter the boss’s office."

"Yes Uncle Joseph," I replied.

"Also remember, a professional executive assistant always does what their employer requests from him. There is no such thing as a task too small. There’s one more thing you must always remember from day one and that is, Johnathan Priestly is not to be called just ‘Johnathan’. You must always address him as Mr. Priestly, or Sir."

“I'll remember Uncle Joseph, now please, you don’t want me to be late for my first day do you?”

“No Gareth, of course not, go on, have a great day!”

I pulled into the parking lot and already had an assigned spot.

I walked to the front of the building and peered up the glass edifice, it all seemed to big and official. I hoped that I wouldn’t fuck this up. I walked into the building, checked in with the concierge who activated my badge for the first time and rode the elevator all the way to the top floor.

Walking to the company’s entrance, I put my badge to the door, and it opened right away.

I settled into my desk, logged on for the very first time and checked my email. After the first ‘Welcome to the company email, I was given a list of the tasks I needed to accomplish for the day and a general reminder of my responsibilities. I then set out to follow the tasks that had been assigned to me and went to work.

First on the list, the coffee, of course, I made a fresh pot for the boss. I placed a cup on the coffee warmer by my boss’s desk, laid out his morning paper that I'd bought at the newsstand in the lobby beforehand, and then went over the list of my boss’s daily appointments and planner.

Mr. Priestly only had three meetings scheduled for the whole day.

I immediately looked up the file for the first meeting of the day on my tablet, so that Mr. Priestly could go over it before his client came in. I placed the appropriate files for his other meetings in bookmarks so that he could quickly refer to them if needed.

Then, I took out the paper files from the file cabinet for each client that was on my list and sorted through them, arranging the appropriate file and matching them to their scheduled appointments according to the list.

When Mr. Priestly entered his office, he seemed to immediately notice with satisfaction that everything was ready to go for the day. He even gave me a once over, that seemed to linger a little too long, to see if I looked satisfactory.

I was ready and eager to please my boss.
